HFA conducted pre-charrette stakeholder interviews to facilitate community involvement to help shape the future of growth in Lawrence, Kansas. HFA also organized the charrette logistics so the Charrette Team would be ready to customize the SmartCode during the seven-day event. The Charrette targeted a variety of areas in Lawrence, including the downtown, infill redevelopment areas, and greenfield sites on the rural fringe.

HFA used a variety of tasks during the charrette, including a downtown retail frontage quality assessment, and assisted with the retail analysis. By the completion of the event, the PlaceMakers Charrette Team had developed a countywide comprehensive sector plan. In addition to developing and facilitating the public meetings and workshops, HFA helped calibrate the Transect Zone metrics and prepared a Placemaking Element as an amendment to the Comprehensive Plan for the City of Lawrence.
