Laurel Railway Train Station Improvements,
Laurel, DE
This Colonial Revival passenger depot was constructed between 1908 and 1912;
however, historic maps suggest the original passenger depot was actually located
several blocks south, but was razed to make way for this existing structure. In 1988,
the Laurel Train Station was identified as a contributing feature to the Laurel Historic
District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Town officials
applied for federal funding from the Delaware Department of Transportation with
the desire to rehabilitate the train station for meeting space, archives, and antique
displays.
HFA surveyed the train station and found while there were no serious problems
that posed a risk to the public, the exterior building and some structural elements
in the basement are in need of repair. HFA also completed the Historic Building
Condition Survey of Laurel Railway Train Station and construction documents for
exterior improvements. The recommended exterior improvements had to preserve
its original appearance and compliment the previously approved architectural plan
for interior renovations.
