Hoopes Reservoir Project,
Wilmington, DE
The City explored options for improving
the safety of the dam and upgrading to
meet current engineering standards.
Improvements included increasing the
size of the small stilling basin below
the dam, reducing the velocity of
water flowing into the stilling basin,
and building a stone-lined channel to
direct discharging water. The City also
decided to increase the dam’s level to
address New Castle County’s drinking
water needs.
In 2006, HFA managed the public
outreach campaign to educate the
surrounding community about these
proposed changes. In August 2006,
HFA facilitated a Public Information
Meeting, where over 70 neighbors
attended to learn more about the
improvements and how environmental
issues were addressed. Construction on
this $3.6 million improvement project
is planned for 2008.
