Beall's Hill Neighborhood Redevelopment Charrette,
Macon, GA

HFA was a key team member in planning and staffing a five-day charrette to plan the revitalization of the historic Beall's Hill neighborhood in Macon, Georgia.

HFA was primarily responsible for stakeholder outreach, facilitation, and documentation. Stakeholder Outreach: HFA conducted individual interviews with pastors, community organizations, and neighborhood residents. HFA also con-facilitated a pre-charrette roundtable with area ministers. Stakeholder Facilitation: HFA prepared meeting agendas and facilitator notes for each of the 11 stakeholder meetings held during the charrette. HFA also facilitated several of the stakeholder meetings. Stakeholder Documentation: HFA edited the notes from the stakeholder meetings for inclusion in the final plan. HFA also wrote a short article about public involvement during the charrette for the Bealls Hill Post-Charrette TownPaper.

Approximately 600 people participated in discussions about the assets and problems in Beall's Hill, and how to address specific social and design challenges. The prep work and stakeholder meetings identified several key design issues, including:
  • a large amount of vacant land;
  • a lack of connection between Mercer University and the neighborhood;
  • poor pedestrian access, especially over the railroad; and
  • the need for neighborhood-scaled retail development.
  • Out of this analysis and the resulting design work evolved the master plan, a thorough analysis of retail potential, building typology schemes for the infill housing, and policy recommendations.
